How long do LED spotlights last?

LED light is generally used to save energy. However, there are notable savings on lamp replacements when considering how long LED bulbs last. In other words, the actual savings are the sum of energy savings and replacement lamp savings.

It is worth mentioning that there is a wide variety of LED products on the market, and not all offer the same quality. A good recommendation is to look for products with certification marks such as UL (USA), Intertek (USA), CSA (Canada) or CE (European Union). These products are the ones that have undergone rigorous testing that validates their quality and safety.

It is also recommended to check the warranty when buying LED lamps. Well-known brands generally offer a 5-year warranty, ensuring an investment return. If any bulb fails within the warranty period, it does not represent a loss for the owner.

Useful Life of LED Lamps

In general, quality LED bulbs last much longer than they replace. However, the specific shelf life will depend on the product type and the manufacturer.

Designed to replace fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, screw-in LED bulbs typically offer a lifespan of 25,000 hours. There are cheaper versions with a duration of 10,000 to 15,000 hours.

It has a lower price, but also requires a replacement sooner. As a point of comparison, halogen bulbs last 1,000 – 2,000 hours, and compact fluorescents last 8,000 – 12,000 hours.

2 or 4-foot LED tubes offer a lifespan of over 50,000 hours. On the other hand, the fluorescent tubes they replace typically last less than 20,000 hours. There are LED replacements for the three main types of fluorescent tubes – T5, T8, and T12.

HID-equivalent high-power LED lamps also have a lifespan of 50,000 hours or more. There is a drastic difference in duration compared to standard HID lamps in this case.

For example, a metal halide (MH) bulb may require replacement in less than 10,000 hours, while an LED equivalent lasts 5 times longer.

Useful Life of Integrated LED Luminaires

An LED luminaire is a product that integrates the housing and power source with the lamps. In this case, the entire luminaire design is optimized for LEDs, achieving a lifespan of up to 100,000 hours.

The duration of LED luminaires is a notable advantage in lighting offices and industrial plants. In these environments, frequent lamp replacement interrupts work.

However, when the service life is 50,000 to 100,000 hours, it can take 10 to 20 years before replacement is necessary.

It is worth mentioning that the useful life of LED products refers to the hour of use. There are 8,760 hours a year, but an LED product that operates 12 hours a day accumulates 4,380 hours yearly.

In this case, a lamp designed for 50,000 hours would operate for more than 11 years. Even with 24-hour operation, 365 days a year, it would last almost 6 years.
